Foundry Payments (Trove) — Campus Payments, Meal Plans and Loyalty

Orion built and ran Trove, Foundry's program management platform for campus payments, meal plans and loyalty, then took it into production as the payments back end for Sodexo's Bite app. Foundry Payments is a US fintech that runs stored-value and loyalty programs for universities, hospitals, sports teams and their members.

Challenges Addressed

  1. 01

Foundry needed one product that tied together four separate financial systems and still felt as simple as a coffee app. In 2020 the platform also had to serve as a white-label back end for Sodexo's Bite ordering app, with a fixed launch date.

  2. 02

Prepaid cards issued and managed by i2c, including bank account linking and bank-to-card transfers

  3. 03

Card payments through Fiserv for parents and students adding value

  4. 04

A transaction ledger in jPOS / jCard as the source of truth for spend and rewards

  5. 05

Meal plans with flex points , passes and discretionary balances, each with its own rules

What Orion Built

  1. 01

Mobile apps: iOS and Android wallet with flex, pass and discretionary balances, add value by card, benefactor invites, auto-reload rules, merchant offers and push notifications.

  2. 02

Web admin: Super admin, organisation and merchant panels with bulk import, loyalty settings, refunds, reversals and reports.

  3. 03

Payments and loyalty engine: i2c card issuance certified in July 2019, Fiserv tokenised payments, real-time i2c webhooks into the jPOS ledger and a points engine.

  4. 04

Partner API for Sodexo's Bite app: registration, token authorisation and card APIs, an embedded Add Value screen and an event feed for points, rewards and cards.

Results

  • One platform, two customer rollouts: FSU CollegeTown in 2019 and Sodexo's Bite app in 2020, both on the same Trove core.
  • Production in one week: Trove, the ledger and both payment processors moved to production between 4 and 7 August 2020 to meet Sodexo's launch.
  • Four financial systems working as one: i2c, Fiserv, jPOS and Trove exchanging events in real time.
  • Sensitive card data kept out of Trove: card capture and activation designed around tokenisation and processor events.
  • Clean handover: Foundry's own developer took over a documented .NET codebase, with Orion reviewing his work during transition.
